THE REMOVAL OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2, AN EMERGING AREA OF RESEARCH

Main Article Content

Abstract

The scientific research on technologies and practices to remove CO2 from the atmosphere is significantly evolving, in parallel with the understanding of the importance of these measures for ambitious goals of limiting global warming.

In the third international conference on negative CO2 emissions in Oxford from 18 to 22 June, in which the main options proposed for removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it in the biosphere, soil, underground or in the oceans have been discussed, the strong development of this sector was evident. This is a rapidly developing field of scientific research. Aspects relating to the role that CO2 removal technologies can have in the context of climate policies and sustainable development were also discussed, as well as aspects relating to the verification and monitoring of removals.
