Abstract

The scientific community that works with atmospheric emissions from vehicles has been shaken by the tragic accident that occurred in Naples on 23 June 2023, which led a few days later to the death of two researchers engaged in the study of the performance and emissions of vehicles. Fulvio Filace, a young trainee at the National Research Council, and Maria Vittoria Prati, a senior researcher at the same CNR. While the investigations on the causes of the vehicle explosion are ongoing, we would like to remember Maria Vittoria, whom many have known and appreciated. On the one hand, for her great competence, passion, enthusiasm and availability; on the other, for having been one of the most influential figures in Italian scientific research on polluting emissions from motor vehicles. Retracing her career is also a way of narrating scientific research on this issue in recent decades.
